Alaska Trip – adventure 1, hike to eagle beach

June 1, 2010

Greetings from Juneau! We’re here for the month visiting family in Vince’s stomping grounds. (There he is above with his home-made sling.) I don’t like it much above 70, so escaping to Alaska in the heat of the summer is so perfect. (Though its actually been warmer here than back in Portland! No fair.)

This was our day 1 adventure – we’ve been here for a week, so there’s more to come! Juneau is a great town. Downtown Juneau is especially cute;  dense, small streets, and wedged tightly in between the water and the mountains. I love having access to mountains, forests, ocean (well, not quite the open ocean, but pretty close!), beaches, glacier, rivers…all in one place. AND camping is free in this state.

A post about Alaska would not be complete without mentioning the wildlife. We haven’t seen a bear YET. We saw several last summer, and did come across fresh bear scat in the woods yesterday, but no actual sitings so far. Geese, eagles and ravens a plenty, whales (Tis the season. Alaska is their bedroom, Hawaii is their kitchen, so they say.), fish, slugs (Benecia has a new pet, Sluggy. He lives in a jar with tons of greens. More on sluggy later.), mosquitos and noseeums, tiny biting flies. Apparently the mosquitoes passed the word on to the noseeums that my Oregon blood is super tasty, because they love me too.

That’s a nice long vacation! Enjoy! Makes me want to take time off to go up there if I don’t get a job by the end of July. =)

What fun, what beauty! You are in my favorite corner of the world…and each of you shares the company of my favorite people. Love Grandma’s new haircut (I’m getting more off today, as well), and the luxuriousness of Vince’s and Benecia’s. Enjoy your time, and the Celebration and each other.

I’m on the home stretch of buying the little schoolhouse here–we’re due to close June 15. It’s old, a little funky, and needs grooming…just like me, so it should be a grand experience. Love and miss you all!
